Origin of MTV music channel

The MTV logo is a well known logo of today. Many people understand that when they see “the chunky, baby block `M’ and the dripping ‘tv’,” they recognize the logo as Music television. It has lasted more than 25 years almost unchanged. Why is this design so good? By keeping the design simple Olinsky andoc his team left the ‘M’ open for alteration without altering the identity itself. This flexibility has given MTv the opportunity to put whatever they want in the ‘M’, whether a pattern to match a holiday or a color to represent a genre of music.

MTV is an American network based in New York City that launched on August 1, 1981. The original purpose of the channel was to play music videos guided by on-air hosts known as VJ's. A VJ is the acronym for Video Jockey just as DJ stands for Disc Jockey. Till this day, MTV still plays music videos for its audience to view. MTV have what you call sister channels such as VH1.

The original purpose of the channel was to build on the success of MTV by playing music videos, but targeting a slightly older demographic than its sister channel, focusing on the lighter, softer side of popular music. VH1 more recently rose to fame by broadcasting celebrity based reality TV programs such as "Behind the music". Nearly 32 million people watch MTV in the US: 8.5 million watch it at least 1 hour a day, 16.1 million watch it at least once a week, and 6.8 million watch it less than once a week.

There are also a variety of different music channels excluded MTV and its sister channels. Examples of popular music channels would be; Kiss, 4Music, The Box, Smash Hits etc. Within one year, Kiss the station was beating MTV in its time slots, and quickly gained a cult status for its low-budget edgy coverage of the UK dance music scene. The channel's presenters included legendary DJs such as BBC Radio 1's Judge Jules.

By the time
the channel was one year old, it had attracted major sponsorship from blue-chip brands such as Levi's , Sony consumer products and The Guardian newspaper. It is part of a group of channels owned by Box Television, (a joint venue between Bauer and Channel 4, which includes 4 Music, Kerrang, Smash Hits, Q,The Box, Magic.
